I woke up to a beautiful sunny Saturday morning and while sipping my delicious coffee, wanted to read some tennis updates. It Has been a great week for tennis fans: an exciting Monte Carlo tournament and some happy news from Serena Williams.
Much to my surprise, instead of reading any of these, all latest articles were about “Romania's Fed Cup captain,Ilie Nastase, who has been heard making a derogatory comment about Serena Williams' unborn child”. As it looked like quite some news, I read ....
... one of the articles. I won’t even quote what he said because it’s profoundly disturbing and unspeakably disgusting. (you can read the article here: http://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/39674903 ).
My first thought was: is this kind of stupidity inborn or rather acquired through some miserable life? Not that I consider myself a great expert of tennis but honestly never heard the name so decided to trace the guy. According to wikipedia Ilie "Nasty" (that’s so true!!!) Nastase is a Romanian former world No. 1 professional tennis player, one of the world's top players of the 1970s, one of the five players in history who have won more than 100 ATP professional titles (58 singles and 45 in doubles) and one of the fastest players remembered for his magnificent lobs and retrieve.
He is also considered one of the most gifted tennis players in history, noted both for his sorcery with the racket and his ability to entertain and amuse spectators with his antics and mimicry. Even during a crucial phase of a match, he was likely to do something bizarre that would entertain the crowd. His greatest weakness was a fragile nervous system and erratic temperament. Nastase definitely has an issue with women: has been married four times and Maxim has placed him at number 6 on its top ten "Living Sex Legends" list, as he is reputed to have slept with over 2500 women. Nastase's own guess, which was at 800–900 women, was too low for the writer of his biography who wanted a larger number, to improve his reputation, as it evidently did.
You may not be a tennis fan, or not even Serena’s fan, it’s a free world here in the West as yet, but for sheer respect to Serena, an undoubtedly outstanding player in the history of tennis and for all her achievements, how a successful player like he himself obviously was, can say something like this? Let’s see how the tennis world and the authorities will react to it. I truly hope he will be appropriately punished and become a huge lesson for future morons before they open their mouth.
